Breastfeeding – an act of love that will pay forward for many years to come.
For the mom, it is a rewarding way to nourish her child, offering benefits such as increased bonding and time spent with baby and a lower risk of breast and ovarian cancers and decreased incidence of diabetes and cardiovascular disease throughout life. Breastfeeding causes secretions of hormones, which give a feeling of happiness and wellbeing and strengthen bonding.
For the baby, it provides antibodies to fight infections such as flu and gastroenteritis, both common causes of hospital admission for bottle-fed infants. Breastfeeding also provides important nutrients for optimal brain growth and development and has protective factors against ear infections and SIDS. Breastfeeding helps to prevent obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease later in life. Mothers of premature infants are also encouraged to breastfeed because it is related to better absorption of nutrients, reduced infection risk, protective antibodies and fewer feeding problems.
Science has now proven what nature knew all along – human milk is best for human babies! So why is the state of Kentucky, together with Tennessee and Louisiana, at the bottom of the ladder for both initiating and continuing breastfeeding? 71.7% percent of Kentucky moms initiate breastfeeding and only 41.9% continue to exclusively breastfeed infant past 3 months of age.
The LCDHD wants to help you successfully breastfeed your infant. Through a program that started in 2011, a breastfeeding coordinator and peer counselors will be available to help you get started, support you throughout, and aid in solving problems.
The WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program is a free program offered through the Lake Cumberland District Health Department, that provides one on one support to pregnant and breastfeeding WIC mothers. A peer counselor will contact you during your pregnancy and assist you with any questions, or concerns you may have with breastfeeding. After delivery, the peer counselor will continue to provide support throughout your breastfeeding experience.
We currently have 6 peer counselors available throughout the Lake Cumberland district. Our peer counselors are available to support mothers outside of regular business hours. They can assist in working through breastfeeding issues and make referrals to our certified lactation counselor as indicated.
Heather Capps RN, CLC with the LCDHD is our Peer Counselor Supervisor and Certified Lactation Counselor. She also serves as the Breastfeeding Coordinator for the Lake Cumberland region. Heather offers in-office and phone breastfeeding support to our WIC families and can assist with any breastfeeding questions, concerns, or issues that families may have. She may also assist any clinic or business with breastfeeding promotion and education. Please call the LCDHD at 1 (800) 928-4416 for more information.
